Mr. Inze Bont first custom boot experience came in 1969 when he fibreglasses the bottom of his feet to make a mold. He quickly discovered that plaster moulds made using alginate like the dentist uses to make a mould of teeth was an easier way to do it. In the mid 1990’s Inze tried to use socks with resin impregnated in them as he had seen being used in the hospitals to take a cast of people’s broken bones. He used the sock to quickly and easily make impression molds of peoples feet. They were so easy to use, he could post them out and people could make their own molds and post them back to our factory. This is still the most popular method used today. Now, in 2007 Bont introduced laser foot scanning where 4 lasers and 8 cameras capture the shape of your foot. After the file is emailed to us, we replicate the foot in our factory. Custom cycle shoe making is a lot easier than inline skates because the ankle area is a very difficult shape to build a boot around and cycling shoes are built under the ankle. However, Bont has been very successful at building custom skates. So successful that for the past 10 years, more skaters at the inline skating world championships use Bont custom skates than another other brand. In fact, in inline speed skating, Bont has made more custom skates over the years than all our competitors combined. The secret is in the art of preparing the mold. Feet have a lot of flesh on them that need to be sanded off, but if any of the bony areas are sanded, it will cause a great amount of pain and blisters for the skater or rider. Even in a cycling shoe, this mold preparation is crucial for a tight fit because when you have such a hard material like carbon fiber only 3mm away from your feet, they need to fit perfectly.

WAYS TO MAKE A MOLD OF YOUR FEET

We basically accept any form of making molds to make the shoes, but remember that the shoes can only be as good as the mold provided to us. We can accept laser scanning, plaster casts, Bont Molding SoxTM or plaster bandages. Please make sure that if you are sending molds to us, pack them really well and make sure they are 100% dry.

LENGTH OF TIME TO MAKE THE SHOE

It usually takes 6 weeks to make the shoes after we have received all the boot specifications, molds, and payment. Laser scans take about 8 weeks.
